History of Father's Day
Fathers Day is celebrated the third Sunday in June. It is a day set aside by presidential proclamation but how did this day come about. After hearing a sermon on Mother's Day in 1909, Mrs. John Dodd first proposed the idea of Father's Day. Her father, a Civil War Veteran, was a widower who died in childbirth leaving him to raise six children.
The first Fathers Day was then observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. It was at that time that other communities began to consider observance of a day for fathers and then President Coolidge considered the idea of a Arroyo Grande day.
It was not until President Johnson signed a proclamation in 1966 that Father's Day was officially celebrated the Third Sunday of June.
